Career Learning Through Stories

I’ve been teaching recently on a career development module with some PHD students.

Asking them the question:

‘If you could have a coffee with a career role model, who would it be and why?’

Easy enough to answer?

Then have a slightly deeper think.

Contextualise the situation and reflect on your role model’s career journey.

What can you learn from their lived experience? How did they navigate their career path? Who influenced their journey.

And how does this play out against your journey?

This is Career learning through stories, a powerful and effective approach that engages people emotionally, intellectually, and practically.

Sharing stories can inspire and motivate, helping us to see multiple perspectives and reduce the fear of failure.

Are you using them in your practice?

If not then why not start by asking your students the question.

And here’s my answer to it: ‘If you could have coffee with a career role model, who would it be and why?’

All the best
