“But what about the beige buffet?”

“But what about the beige buffet?”
We know that we never finish learning, but working in careers there is even more pressure to keep up to date, with labour market information, national guidance and good practice and how to support your learners in the most fresh and impactful way.

As the careers leader, you are the primary resource and keeping yourself “current” can be one of the most helpful ways to improve the provision for your learners. Since the pandemic, engaging in CPD has become so much easier with professionals creating networks across the country, hearing from experts in a way that might have been much more challenging in the decade before – but it does come with some hefty disadvantages, less ability to network and experience new places and people……….most especially the loss of the beige buffet!

beige buffet CPD

I was fortunate to meet with the Lincolnshire LEP last week and deliver some CPD for a group of employers about engaging with one to one conversations with young people. The buzz of delivering group interactions left me feeling upbeat and (almost) made me miss teaching. It made me remember that CPD is learning and while we prioritise the knowledge acquired by our learners and how they like to learn best – we sometimes forget to consider how best to engage ourselves. Perhaps you’re ready and have the time and budget to get out and attend events, or maybe you want to make use of the wide range of CPD options that you can carry out on-line, or most likely a blend of both. Ask yourself: How do I learn best? – because every high-impact hour of CPD you engage with, will trickle down and enhance the learners you are responsible for supporting with their futures.
At home, in your office or out and about – CPD is worth it – even if you have to bring your own beige. (BYOB)
