We at Complete-Careers call upon the government and all appropriate organisations involved in education and employment to make the academic year 2020-2021 a time when we really changed education to meet the needs of the 21st century working world.
The UK education system is not preparing young people for the 21st century world of work.
Jobs no longer need exams sat between 16 and 21. These mainly knowledge-based qualifications are as out of date as the 20th Century. Issues surrounding this year’s exam results only add fuel to the fire.
From an early age, young people need to learn about themselves. This should be prioritised over spending most of their time in school preparing for handwritten exams. They need to aim to be the best they can be, not just academically, but in all the ways they interact with each other and the world.
Employers need people with transferable and appropriate employability skills. This autumn as young people reengage with education Complete Careers LLP believe it is time for major change.
From early years children and young people need to be supported to learn, explore and experience the world of work and the opportunities available. We need to ensure they understand what skills 21st century jobs and employers need now and in the future.
Young people need to be central to and take ownership of their lifelong pathway through learning into earning.
This requires the career learning curriculum to be put firmly at the centre of schooling. We need to ensure schools and colleges are provided with the resources they need to put in place a dynamic career programme that reflects the advances in technology across our working and personal lives. This will mean young people are properly equipped to learn, grow and work in the swiftly changing world they inhabit.
