'Unlocking self-awareness and unleashing superpowers'

Complete-Careers Conference November 2026
'Unlocking self-awareness and unleashing superpowers'

The policy position for careers education and guidance in England is arguably at its strongest since schools and colleges were given responsibility in 2012.  Funding and time remain significant barriers, but the ambition is clear to see.

‘A career is a vital thread running through a person’s life. It is formed by the ongoing complex and shifting choices an individual makes, based on their understanding of themselves and the world around them.’

The above quote from Good Careers Guidance – Ten Years On, Gatsby Foundation November 2024, identifies the importance of self-understanding, yet still the emphasis for careers education and guidance is largely dominated and associated with ‘work’, ‘jobs’ and ‘plans’.

In an era where close to 1 million young people are NEET (and we await the recommendations from the Milburn report), this conference will place ‘self’ front and centre, supporting career professionals in education and guidance to help young people unlock their self-awareness and unleash their superpowers.

The careers conversation is shifting from choosing a future to understanding yourself well enough to create one.  The conference speakers will consider recent career-related research, policy and practice with a focus on what career leaders and practitioners can do to unlock self-awareness, whilst supporting their learners to discover their superpowers.

The conference will have keynote contributions from:

  • John Ambrose, Director, Complete-Careers LLP
  • Tomas Wood, MySkillGap

This conference is aimed at careers leaders/career professionals working in education.  Speakers will help attendees to make sense of priorities and resources in the context of their careers programme, the profession and most importantly, their learners.

The following inputs will help career leaders/career professionals to reflect on how they currently support learner self-awareness:

  • Self-awareness within the new CDI framework, Sue Alder, Head of Professional Development and Standards, Career Development Institute
  • The new ‘Destinations’ resource, Lis McGuire
  • Tools and data to support self-discovery, TBC, Careers and Enterprise Company

The conference will run remotely via Zoom.  There will be opportunities for interaction and to post questions to speakers, as well as regular screen breaks.
