If not you… who?

Succession Planning as a careers adviser is something you might not have considered, but if you are planning on retiring or a career change in the next 5 years, then chances are the learners just entering Year 7 now in the schools where you work, will not benefit from your skill and wisdom. With a rapidly retiring work force and huge regional shortages, finding qualified careers advisers is only going to get harder. Perhaps you know of a talented teaching assistant or a disillusioned teacher, or skilled careers co-ordinator who would be well placed to up-skill and gain experience in guidance. Consider mentoring a budding careers adviser – and if you find someone a bit special, who you think can read and empower others, then perhaps direct them towards a post-graduate course, or an apprenticeship (Complete Careers Apprenticeship)– whatever works best for them.

It’s not hard to see why the sector is not appealing to younger people, poor pay and heavy responsibilities being voiced as two reasons that we are struggling to attract people into this field. Yet for anyone working in the sector – the privilege and variety offered by meeting young people and helping them to understand what they love, is beyond addictive.

Spring is a time for new beginnings, careers advisers ask yourself – if not you… who?
