After thirty years of waiting Liverpool supporters are finally getting their Sports Relief.
Their wait pre dates the inception of the real Sports Relief by 12 years.
But in the subsequent 18 years only England’s great ever coach, Smithy (that James Cordon alias) has made the cross over between sports and careers:
Smithy highlights how important good coaching and mentoring is in helping people achieve their career goals – honestly!!!
So how else can we make the cross over from sport to careers education?
And make it inclusive for those whose genes mean that exercise leaves them feeling awful?
As this clip with Andy Murray demonstrates, Sports Relief appeals because the title of the show is only a premise.
So don’t be put off the title ‘Sports Relief’ like Andy was!
Instead use it to make students curious about the content of what’s going to happen in a lesson. For example:
Have a ‘Sports Relief Charade of the Year’ lesson.
- Students come dressed as someone associated with sport and a sporting occasion.
- Could be a physiotherapist – a dietician – or a hot dog seller?
- And then have them compete for the title, by demonstrating by mime the key task they do.
- With teams – as in in Question of Sport – guessing their role.
Or
How about a ‘Smithy’s Sports Relief Job of the Year’ workshop.
- Splitting students into teams to research the more bizarre jobs associated with sport.
- Horse Masseuse Statistician Stadium Announcer Piste Grooming Vehicle Operator Sport exercise psychologists Stadium designer
- Mascot and Golf Ball Diver – which they can easily research in the brilliant The Bonkers Book of Jobs https://complete-careers.com/product/bonkers-book-jobs-2/ (unabashed plug!).
- With teams presenting the three best and worst thing about the job.
- The class/workshop judging their findings out of 10 by holding up scorecards
- And crowning one job, ‘Smithy’s Sports Relief Job of the Year’.

Join up your plans with other events taking place in the school.
And as Sports Relief comes round a lot quicker than Premier League titles for Liverpool you’ll have ample opportunity to re-visit and develop your ideas.
