On 5th January 2023 the Department for Education updated its statutory guidance for schools and colleges. The main changes in the guidance relate to new legislation on Provider Access, as well as details of processes for non-compliance.
We know time is precious for Careers Leaders, so we have again provided a summary and supporting resource we hope is useful.
The summary condenses the 60 page statutory guidance into a more digestible six pages. It starts by identifying the main changes and overall flavour of the guidance. The summary then outlines, what we consider to be, the ‘key components’ with quotations relating to key sections including Gatsby, Careers Leaders, Governors. Please see here for the summary

Quality in Careers Standard through Complete-Careers Career Mark
The role of the Quality in Careers Standard has been further clarified as part of the overall ‘careers system’ in England. Here the Quality in Careers Standard is referred to alongside Ofsted and Matrix (colleges) in providing the ‘accountability and quality’.
‘We strongly recommend that all schools and colleges work towards the single national Quality in Careers Standard to support the development of their careers programme.’ (Page 13)

Provider Access Legislation
Complete-Careers have two completely free resources that schools and colleges can use to help learners understand the range of learning and career options available:
Complete-Careers Profiling Quiz :This enables learners to build their self-awareness and understand more about their vocational profile. This is an important first step in understanding self and preferences before considering which route, pathway and options are most suited to individuals’ needs and preferences.
Fulfilling Futures : Originally produced by Complete-Careers with Greenwood Academies Trust to support learners aged 14-18 to ‘catch up’ on missed career learning after lockdown. This resource is full of practical support for learners including a detailed section on learning options in the ‘opportunities’ section.
Personal Guidance
‘Schools and colleges should make sure that careers advisers (internal and external) providing personal guidance to students are trained to the appropriate level.’ (Page 40).
We are providers of careers guidance in Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. We also offer the Career Development Apprenticeship. This level 6 qualification enables schools and colleges to train their own careers guidance practitioner. The course is free for most schools and colleges through the apprenticeship levy system. Access to qualified careers guidance professionals can be difficult and also expensive (whether employed internally or commissioned externally). We promote the triage approach to advice and guidance upskilling staff competencies to provide basic careers advice and targeting careers guidance for those that want and need it the most. Career Leader Training
The statutory guidance promotes the role of the Careers and Enterprise Company in providing free Career Leader training. Complete-Careers are working in partnership with Causeway Education and the University of Wolverhampton to provide the new free training aimed specifically at Senior Leaders and Managers.
